Martin County Quiet Heroes: Coronavirus-friendly Green Market

Two Stuart groups connected to bring a coronavirus-friendly green market to Stuart on Sunday at the fairgrounds. Vendors were given face masks and practiced safe food handling and social distancing procedures. Cars drove through next to the food tents, which were set up 15-feet apart down the lane. About 20 vendors participated, offering fresh fruits and vegetables, breads, meats, cheeses, honey, dog treats, baked goods, and more.

Stuart resident Joan Raines headed out to Walmart to buy her first sewing machine last week. “I have no idea what I’m doing,” she told her friend Rachel Terlizzi. “But I want to do my part. You’ve inspired me to get involved.” Raines decided to learn to sew after hearing that Terlizzi had started making protective face masks in response to the shortage we face all around the country as the coronavirus outbreak accelerates.

Many people in our area still need our help. Some of these people are our older residents served by the Council on Aging of Martin County. They need us to to keep showing up by delivering meals to seniors and donating non-perishable food. We can also help from home, by making financial contributions to support services for the elderly.
