Every once in a while I run into someone whose face I recognize but I can’t quite place how I know them. I almost always figure it out and often it ends up being someone who I photographed in the past. Once I remember, I can actually picture their portraits in my mind. I have quite a good memory like that. (My husband does not appreciate this quality—I remember things from many years ago that he would rather forget.)

This happened again recently at a meeting of parent volunteers at my son’s high school. There was a woman across the room that I knew, but I couldn’t place her. When she introduced herself, I realized I had done their family portraits years ago. Back then, her kids were small (as were mine). When the meeting dispersed, I made sure to say “Hi.” She asked me if I still do photography, which always strikes me as surprising and sort of funny. I have been a family portrait photographer since the mid 90's and have always been quite busy.

This time, though, it hit home. If I keep running into people who are asking me this, it must not be obvious that I am still a portrait photographer. After some thought, I realized the reason is that I don’t advertise, nor do I “network.” My kids are 15 and 17. I do love being a photographer, but I love my family more. And at least until they leave home, structuring my life around theirs is my priority. That means there isn’t much extra time for networking or activities that take time away from family.

So I thought I should send emails and post consistently to my blog, letting the world will know I am still here. This is your notice that I am still here, actually still in the same business location since 2004. See below for a video showing some of my latest work. Is it time for your next portrait?
